[Literature Library] Maternal probiotic use during breastfeeding and infant health

Maternal administration of Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716 during breastfeeding has been proposed as an efficient strategy to help prevent lactational mastitis. A secondary study revealed that this probiotic intervention decreased the incidence of conjunctivitis in offspring and influenced the weight z-score of offspring accordingly to the quantity of Lactobacillus in the human milk microbiota. L. fermentum may also help protect against respiratory infections among offspring, but the influence would depend on the quantity of Staphylococcus in human milk and infant faeces.
