Relationship between maternal vitamin D status and preterm birth

In an urban medical center treating a large and diverse population of women, a clear association between maternal vitamin D blood concentration and risk of preterm birth (< 37 gestational weeks) was demonstrated. Lower risk of preterm birth was noted among mothers with higher vitamin D concentration (≥ 40 ng/ml).

Maternal 25(OH)D concentrations ≥40 ng/mL were associated with substantial reduction in preterm birth risk in a large, diverse population of women.
