Iodine status during pregnancy and lactation is crucial for early growth and development. This randomized trial demonstrated that an adequate supply of iodine via supplement (225 mcg of iodine per day in the form of potassium iodide) and iodized salt (30-40 mcg of iodine per gram) had similar influences on human milk iodine concentration as well as maternal and infant urinary iodine concentration (UIC).
Iodine deficiency during pregnancy and lactation could expose the infant to severe iodine deficiency disorders.
