[Literature Library] The Synergy between Lactose and Bovine Milk Oligosaccharides (BMOs)

This study compared the prebiotic effect of bovine milk oligosaccharides (BMO) and synthetic galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) using mono- and cocultures of eight major bacteria related to a healthy infant microbiome. The results revealed that BMO treatments supports growth of B. longum subsp. longum. In addition, there was found a synergistic effect of combining lactose and BMO in regard to reducing Clostridium perfringens, maintaining stable numbers of Parabacteroides distasonis and simultaneously increasing numbers of the beneficial B. longum subsp. logum.
